Sewing 301: Mastering Knits


Make this flattering top/tunic/dress while learning the basics of sewing with knits.


In Sewing 301 we focus on sewing with knits. We’ll cover the basics; the difference between types of knits, necessary notions, what to look for when picking a pattern, fabric preparation, cutting and more. After three short weeks you’ll leave with a ton of knowledge as well as a finished Coco Dress that you’ll be proud to show off to your friends and family. NOTE: 301 level classes have a maximum of 4 students per class.  Please register early to secure your spot.

Cost: $325 course fee, includes 7.5 hours of instruction and some materials.

Prerequisite: This class assumes that you’ve completed our Sewing 201 course or have equivalent skills

Skills Learned: the difference between various knit fabrics (single knits, double knits, and rib knits), appropriate needles and pins, serger shortcuts, dual feed foot or walking foot, cutting tips, sizing techniques and more.

  • March 2022 AM: class meets Thursdays, March 3rd, 10th and 17th from 10:00am-12:30pm
  • March 2022 PM: class meets Thursdays, March 3rd, 10th and 17th from 7:00-9:30pm

  • Sewing machine and/or serger (instruction will be provided for both)
  • You sewing machine/serger manual
  • thread and basic sewing kit**
  • Some practice materials will be provided, additional materials required for garment are listed below.
  • Tilly and the Buttons Coco Top + Dress pattern, available for online purchase by clicking here. Pattern is incredibly flattering and fits US sizes 2-16.
  • Fabric: medium weight knit fabric with very little stretch. Look out for interlock knit, double knit, ponte di roma, or feel the fabric to check it’s not too fine or stretchy.
    • Dress with funnel neck + cuffs – 2.3m x 150cm wide (2 1/2 yards x 60in) OR 3m x 115cm wide (3 1/4 yards x 45in)
    • Plain dress – 2m (2¼ yards) x 150cm (60in) wide OR 2.7m (3 yards) x 115cm (45in) wide
    • Top with funnel neck + cuffs – 1.8m (2 yards) x 150cm (60in) wide OR 2.7m (3 yards) x 115cm (45in) wide
    • Plain top – 1.5m (1¾ yards) x 150cm (60in) wide OR 2.2m (2½ yards) x 115cm (45in) wide
  • Matching thread
  • Ribbon or stay tape – 30cm (12in) x 6-8mm (1/4in) wide
  • Stretch or ballpoint needle for your sewing machine
